These paintings are created with gravel and paint on canvas, which gives them a rough textured surface that absorbs light. The use of gold which, when mixed with black of blue acquires an interesting bronze hue, gives the paintings a great deal of nuance. At heart, these works reflect the rough landscape of Iceland where Gunnars originally came from. The light that filters through thick cloud and gets caught in gullies and valleys between mountains and on the plains has so many facets that the subject has endless possibilities.
